A Group

SeeLAB with Prof. Vajda NOTE: THIS IS NEWLY ADDED!

Students should fill at a minimum, a one cubic foot box with objects from home. I use the word “home” in the most general sense. A place or an area that you associate with as being where you and your family are from. Objects from your house and the surrounding area. Half the objects can be things you care about and the other half you need to be willing to permanently alter or destroy. MAKE GOOD DECISIONS!

Please consider the following:

Appearance: Color, texture, shape, scale, form

Man made (symmetrical) or from nature (organic)

Seed pods, plants, fungi

Photos or printed material

Soft objects and hard objects

Make sure you have an extensive variety objects!

Artist Materials: charcoal, charcoal pencils, erasers, masking tape, drawing boards

MakeLAB with Prof. Green

-Assorted colors of sewing thread ( about 3-4 spools)

-2 balls of yarn in different colors

-1 spool of heavy weight white button/carpet thread

-package of assorted hand-sewing needles ( including a curved needle)

-Box of straight pins

-Good pair of fabric cutting scissors

-2 used stuffed animals ( find med. to large size ones these will be taken apart for class purposes)

-A 3-Ring binder

-Fabric: You will need a large quantity of fabric for this workshop. The larger the quantity and variety of patterns, colors, textures, weights the better. You may buy new materials but we strongly encourage you to use old clothing, blankets, quilts, etc. that can be easily found at places like Salvation Army or your parents storage rooms. Please wash all items before bringing them into class for use.

B Group

FuseLAB with Profs. McMahon and Blomster

-Please see blog for link to Dick Blick website

SeeLAB with Prof. Deutsch

- 1 set of head phones. Can use ear bud type.

C Group

CoLAB with Prof. Hunter

- Bring an interesting container – see the blog posting from Prof. Illuminato. You will need your tools from your toolbox as well as a ½ inch 3 ring binder and paper. It would also be helpful to have interesting fabric, paper materials or smaller boxes on hand for this class or anything left over from your material archive.

-Utility knife (Olfa or x-Acto with extra blades)

CoLAB with Prof. Illuminato

Profs. McMahon and Blomster have supplied the following link for easy ordering of your materials for their section of fuseLAB. All materials on list are required and colors cannot be substituted. Check to make sure you don’t already have some of the supplies listed before ordering everything, such as the ruler and compass. Note that this is for their section ONLY. Prof. Morgan will have other required materials (yet to come.)

For your coLAB course next semester, you will need to bring back one or more containers. Select something that is:

1. Rigid. It should be made of wood, plastic or similar materials. (no cardboard!)

2. Closes. It has an inside and an outside.

3. Can be altered, taken apart or adapted. Avoid something that you want to leave ‘as is’.

4. At least one foot long in one direction, but can be larger!

5. It should be interesting, unusual, or distinctive and something you LIKE.

6. It should NOT be new. This should be purchased at a thrift store or garage sale or found in your parents basement! Please do not purchase a new box at a craft store!

You will need this on the FIRST day of class! You may want to bring a couple so you have choices!

When you return to Alfred, you will be taking four new studios called: seeLAB, makeLAB, fuseLAB, and coLAB. Each will require different materials and it’s best to pick those up before coming to Alfred. Faculty will be asking that I post the required materials here in the next few weeks. So please check back!

Just a reminder, next Wednesday we will be learning more about pin-hole photography. Make sure you come to class with a camera and lens material, we’ll help you assemble it and supply the paper! Remember that a camera is simply a light-tight box or object and that the lens material is a piece cut from a pop or soda can.

We hope that you have all had a restful break, re-connected with family and friends — perhaps even missing your new home in Alfred? We are busily planning the spring semester and have some important information to share with you.

You have all been divided into new groups for the spring semester. There are 4 groups ( A, B, C, D). The spring semester is organized differently from the Fall in that you will be engaged in 4, six-week long workshops. These workshops build on many of the themes and skills that you have built last semester and introduce new ways of working.

They are: Drawing, Color, Systems and Time. Each group will be assigned to 2 workshops during A block and 2 workshops during B block. These workshops will run during our normal Foundations class time from 8-11 am. Classes will be held int he following studios: Drawing: Cohen Studio main floor, Color: Cohen studio basement, Time: Harder Hall Studio, Systems: Harder Hall Studio.

Below you’ll find the Group List, that shows which group you belong to and the second one shows your group’s workshop schedule.

We’ve already posted material lists requested by each professor on this blog. Please make sure that you buy the materials for the specific section you are assigned to. Use the name of the professor to know which section. Two sections, Systems and Color, are using the same materials list. Please have all materials purchased before arriving back to school as you all know how hard it is to find them near Alfred.

Here’s the original list of materials… please make sure that you replenish your toolbox before returning to Alfred!

Foundation Material + Tool List

o Acrylic Paint: Large tubes: Titanium white, black, cadmium red medium, alizarin crimson, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, pthalo blue, hansa yellow light, yellow ochre/oxide.

o 1 set of drawing pencils min. 6 (assortment of H and B pencils)
o 1 set of pencil crayons min. 12 color set.
o 1 set of oil pastels min. 24 color set
o 5 packages of vine charcoal
o 5 packages of compressed charcoal
o Conte Crayons: white, gray, black and sanguine (min. 2 sticks each)
o Graphite sticks: 6B and 9B
o Erasers: kneaded, pink gum, white rubber erasers (min. 1 each)
o 2 rolls of drafting tape
o 2-4 large bulldog clips
o Utility knife with snap off blades (such as Olfa Model A)
o X-acto Knife with replacement blades
o 2 Boxes clear pushpins
o 18” Metal cork backed ruler
o Hot glue gun with 2 packages of glue sticks
o 1 bottle Sobo brand glue
o Brushes: #8 synthetic round, #7, #10, #12 synthetic bright, Bamboo brush

o Portfolio case (22” x 30” or larger)

We’ll be giving you supply lists and info about your spring classes after New Year’s Day, but thought it might be helpful to have your Systems Workshop supply list now!

Systems Workshop Materials List

3-ring Binder

Coffee Mug

Seam Ripper
Assorted colors of Sewing Thread ( about 3 -5 spools)
Black, White and Gray Heavyweight Thread (Button or Carpet Thread)
Assorted colors of Embroidery Floss
Package of assorted hand-sewing needles (including heavy-duty or curved)
Package/Small Box of Straight Pins
Good pair of fabric cutting scissors or rotary scissors
2 used, stuffed animals ( find med. to large size ones, they will be taken apart for our class purposes)

Fabric: You will need a large quantity of fabric for this workshop. This fabric can be bought new but we strongly encourage you to be creative in how to procure used material to recycle. The fabric can be found fabric i.e old blankets, used clothing, used sweaters, sheets, coats, old evening gowns. Salvation Army is a good place to start or check around with your family — I am sure that parents and relatives have lots of old clothes etc… hanging around. Keep an eye out for unusual patterns, colors, textures, etc…the more quantity and selection you have the better. Also please wash all items before bringing them back to school.

You will also need a big bag of ‘stuffing’materials. We’ve found that large used mattress covers are great for this, or old blankets, pillows, plastic bags or foam.

If you have a portable sewing machine you may find it useful to bring back to campus. We do not expect you to one and we will have some on hand for your use,
