Readings for the next two Wednesday Classes

Dear Students,

Over the next two weeks we will have the opportunity to discuss and explore the new exhibition Queering Space at Alfred University on view at the Fosdick-Nelson Gallery and around Alfred, NY.  This coming Wednesday Nick Lenker will be a visiting artist in our class. He has offered a reading to help set up the conversation and the information he will share about his interdisciplinary practice. Nick Poster

We will meet in Holmes Auditorium at 9:00am

The following week the curators from Queering Space will discuss the exhibition. This includes Loren Britton, Christie DeNizio, Sara Ferguson, Asad Pervaiz, Res, and Erica Wessmann. We will again meet in Holmes Auditorium at 9:00am.

To help explore some ideas and thoughts on queer identity please read the following:

Being in Trouble: In The Company of Judith Butler

The Gender Nonconformity of My Fatness

Looking forward to more conversations on the complexity of identity as artists!

Alter Ego/Future Selves

A reminder that we need 2 images from you by Thursday morning at 12:00am (Wednesday night) to the email address: foundations2016@gmail.com. One will be a picture of your Alter Ego and the other will be of your Future Self.  Please consider all the comments and suggestions your faculty made today regarding, lighting, color, scale, costume, position, etc! And also have fun with these! We will look at these in class on Thursday so make sure you have them in to us by midnight.

AND do some research into the artists we looked at today!

During the first week back we will be engaged in a workshop that will ask you to explore the topic of Identity. You will be working individually and in groups to produce photographic portraits. While you are at home you may want to collect clothing and interesting props, you will be using the cameras on your cell phones but if you have other digital camera options please consider bringing them back to campus. We will provide lighting and tripods.

In preparation please read this essay by James Baldwin Letter from a Region of My Mind

We will be discussing it during our Wednesday class.
